Remote work in the Algarve: preparing an apartment for working days

Working during a stay starts with practical checks, not Wi-Fi promises. Prepare your connection, workspace and calendar before combining time off with meetings.

To work from an apartment in the Algarve, first check three things: a connection suited to your tasks, a space where you can work comfortably and a backup for an internet failure. Before booking at Pine Sun Park, send your specific requirements; neither a photograph nor a Wi-Fi listing guarantees an office setup.

Define the work before choosing your dates

Write down how many people will work, their hours and the applications they use. Separate tasks that can tolerate interruptions from meetings, file uploads and remote access that cannot wait. Confirm your organisation’s conditions for working away from your usual location and its security requirements. Allow time after arrival for testing rather than scheduling an important presentation straight away.

Test download, upload and latency under real conditions

Ask for recent information about the intended apartment’s connection and clarify where it was measured. On arrival, test from your working position using your own computer at different points during your planned working hours. Record download, upload and latency, along with the time and any interruptions. Compare results with your applications’ and team’s requirements rather than a universal target.

Make a trial call with your camera on and screen sharing enabled. If two people will be working, test simultaneous meetings from each person’s intended position, including a typical file transfer. Check for broken audio, frozen video and conversational delays. A single speed test cannot replace this rehearsal or guarantee performance throughout your stay.

Check your VPN and rehearse the mobile-data backup

Test your organisation’s approved VPN, authentication and access to essential tools. If something fails, contact support before changing security settings. Do not disable protections to work around a connection problem.

Prepare mobile data as a possible alternative, not guaranteed coverage. Check your plan’s data allowance, charges, roaming terms and tethering permissions. Test the hotspot inside the apartment and make a call through it. Save your team’s contact details and agree how to report an outage. Have tasks available offline where permitted, so switching networks is not your only fallback.

Confirm the space and adjust the ergonomics

Request photographs and measurements of the table and chair available in the specific apartment. Check sockets, lighting and whether calls can be separated from other people’s downtime. Do not assume a desk, office chair, monitor or soundproofing. A table shown in a photograph does not establish comfort for full working days.

Bring a laptop stand, keyboard, mouse and headset if needed. Aim to support your feet, position the screen without constantly bending your neck and avoid glare. Try the arrangement before a long session and schedule breaks to change position.

Keep holiday days separate from working days

Mark genuinely free days, meetings and your finishing time on the calendar. Agree with your travel companions when you will be unavailable and who will handle shared responsibilities. An afternoon of calls is not an afternoon off. Save outings for free periods and avoid promising constant availability to either colleagues or companions.

Plan a longer stay in stages

Before committing to several weeks, confirm the apartment, dates, total cost and terms for changes or extensions in writing. Budget for mobile data and any equipment you need to bring. Set aside time at the start to check that the routine works and review your connection tests. If an essential condition remains uncertain, resolve it before committing to the whole stay.

Frequently asked questions

What should we test if two people need meetings?

Run simultaneous calls from the intended working positions, with cameras and screen sharing enabled. Look for delays and interruptions as well as measuring upload, download and latency.

Can I assume there will be a desk in the apartment?

No. Ask for photographs and measurements of the table and chair in your intended apartment.

Will a hotspot solve every internet problem?

No. Test your plan and reception in the apartment. Prepare offline tasks and agree how to notify your team.
